What started out in 1985 as a wonderful children’s story has, with the adaptation to film in 2004, become a Christmas classic. Not only has the Caldecott Medal winner for children’s literature won a spot in the hearts of young and old alike, it has created many ways to try to emulate the experience itself.

Not only are there now Polar Express pajama parties and viewings of the 3D Polar Express starting this November, there are also real rides on real trains running from 74 to 90 minutes. Some of these rides come complete with hot chocolate and cookies and a reading of the book. Most will even have Santa and maybe his helpers show up as well.

For those in South Carolina, you might want to check out the 4D Immersion Theater showing of the movie at the South Carolina Aquarium in downtown Charlestown. It comes complete with gusts of wind, snow, smells of hot chocolate and movement under your feet to make you feel you are moving along with the motion of the movie.

However, what is a parent to do if none of these events are in their local area? How about getting a Lionel Polar Express train set, a copy of the book and the video?

Just set up an evening of Polar Express train fun with the whole family. Add some hot chocolate and Christmas cookies while viewing the movie. After the Polar Express DVD let the kids play with the Lionel Polar Express train set and finish the night with a reading of the book as you tuck the kids into bed. This could become your new family tradition for Christmas every year.
