Although bird feeders may have been attracting wild birds all summer long, winter is when they really need the support of the see the bird feeders provide. Some communities and bird sanctuaries even provide a program for people with feeders and bird baths to bring them in and get them cleaned up and ready for their winter time visitors.
The length of the day is what gets wild birds busy looking for their winter feeding grounds. So, since the days are getting shorter and winter is just around the corner, now is the time to prepare those feeders and set them up with wild bird seed.
A large bird feeder is one way to draw in a lot of wild birds and doesn’t have to be messed with quite so often for the bird lover. It can be filled with high fat and high protein food that will be of the most help to wild birds this winter. Some types of food that would fill these requirements are sunflower and safflower seeds and peanut pieces.
However, birds aren’t the only wildlife that will be attracted to the feeders. Squirrels love the treats, too, so adding some protection to the bird feeders to keep them away may be a good thing to do.
While the bird seed and food will attract wild birds to the feeders providing an open source of water is a very good idea as well. Just like humans, birds like to keep clean and clean feathers help insulate the birds during winter.
